INTRODUCTION
We take the time to choose the perfect door to emphasize the entrance and make our homes look grander even by just standing at the doorstep. But in doing so, we often overlook the importance of the door lock design and its details. Keep in mind that the door lock is as important as much as the type of door you choose.
There are so many different door lock types. Each serves a special function depending on the security level needed in a room. You need to be wary when it comes to selecting the appropriate door lock for each door in your home to ensure not just design coherence, but security and convenience as well.
So, if you’re wondering what would be the perfect door lock to put in your door, whether it’s the front door, bedroom door, or bathroom door, we’ve come up with a list of the most popular door lock types and their uses.
1. Door Knob Locks
Doorknob locks are by far the most popular type of door lock. It’s basically everywhere. Chances are, your door locks right now are also door knob locks. This door lock type is pretty straightforward.
It’s common in interior spaces like bedrooms and bathrooms but it is not ideal for exterior doors like the front door and back door. This is because doorknob locks only serve a limited capacity for security. They tend to break easily under the exertion of force. So, if the lock in your front door is a doorknob lock, you might consider updating it or pair it with a deadbolt to strengthen its security.
When it comes to convenience, doorknob locks top the charts. It’s easy to open and lock allowing people to smoothly transition between rooms. This is also what makes doorknob locks perfect for offices and workplaces where people flow into different rooms every now and then.
Typically, doorknob locks are rounded in design and have a silvery brightness of chrome and stainless steel. However, there’s now a huge influx of different doorknob styles and colors. You can opt for a gold-colored knob, wooden knob, or a simple minimalistic style for a contemporary door.
2. Deadbolts
Deadbolts are widely used in residential homes. Unlike doorknob locks, deadbolts are considered the most secure type of door lock. You can only open it with a key. A deadbolt does not have spring-loaded mechanisms to operate the bolt, that is why it is termed as “dead”. Meaning you can’t move it.
This type of lock is typically used in exterior doors. Some people use double cylinder deadbolts for an added layer of security. But you can also use the single-cylinder deadbolt in rooms where it deems fit.
Deadbolts are great to have in front doors, storage spaces with important things in store, and other rooms that need to be soundly secured.
3. Lever Handle Door Lock Type
Cylindrical lever handle locks are pretty much similar to doorknob locks in terms of function and convenience. However, lever handle locks also have a significant difference which makes them an appropriate door lock for certain types of doors or rooms.
This type of lock is commonly seen in residential interior spaces but is widely suggestive in commercial spaces. When designing for accessibility, lever handle locks work best compared to any other type of lock simply because of their cylindrical shape – making it easier to grip.
Lever handle locks also come in different styles. They are way more stylish compared to doorknob locks because the lever can be configured into different forms. Designs vary from ornate traditional handles to modern contemporary ones.
4. Mortise Locks
Mortise locks look kind of similar to lever handle locks but they originated way older than cylindrical locks. With that said, this type of lock can be found in older homes or buildings. If you’ve ever been to an old traditional home, you might see that the locks on their doors have the mortise mechanism.
Although some traditional homes have now been upgraded with newer utilities, there are still quite a few that use mortise locks. Mortise locks come as a set of hardware that needs to be assembled in the door. One of its defining features is the strength of its lock. It is considered heavy-duty which is why it lasts longer and still operating even in century-old houses.
5. Smart Door Locks
A smart lock is a smart home device that functions when connected to Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. To put it simply, you can easily open and close a door with a tap of a finger or a voice command. Another staggering feature of a smart lock includes remote controlling it via an app so you can operate it wherever you are.
Of course, some concerns come along with using high-tech amenities like this one. But smart lock doors also provide a traditional key port so you can open your door regardless of your Wi-Fi connectivity strength.
Modern apartments, condo units, and contemporary landed homes are now using smart locks. It offers a new and convenient smart home experience which a lot of people find efficient and helpful in their everyday lives.
6. Electronic Locks
Electronic locks are a traditional version of smart locks. They function similarly to smart locks but with limited features. Examples of electronic locks are those doors that require a passcode or a specific access card that you need to swipe to open the door.
This type of lock is highly popular in luxury apartments and condo units as well. Like the smart lock, it also comes with a traditional key. As technology becomes more advanced, new features are being added and electronic locks are becoming sophisticated which then develops into what we now called smart locks.
Bottom line:
There are a lot of door lock types out there that we haven’t covered. But these door lock type, are the most popular ones that we commonly see now. Whether in commercial or residential spaces, these door lock types offer the best quality in terms of security, efficiency, and design.
So, if you’re thinking of updating your door lock to achieve that new level of comfortability and safety, check out the locks we mentioned above.
